Ginger ale is a milder, sweeter, less gingery cousin of ginger beer — Canada Dry and Schweppes are the household brands. In a Shirley Temple or a simple whiskey highball, ginger ale's gentleness is appropriate. In a Moscow Mule it is not — the drink needs ginger beer's punch.
